We believe the use of headgear in contact sports like AFL combined with practicing the correct technique, is pivotal to the safety of young players.

As Australian parents, coaches and leaders of sporting organisations, we all have a role to play in keeping our future safe. First and foremost, we need to be teaching the correct technique and to always protect the head when attacking a ball or entering a contest.

We need to collaborate in the interests of athletes while playing contact sports. Our headgear should be worn as a reminder to continue to practice correct technique, not a reason to be reckless.

There are consistent questions that plague this space including:

  • Does headgear help with concussion?
  • Do helmets prevent concussion?

Unfortunately, the answers are not straightforward. The use of headgear is not to create a perception that players will be bulletproof and will never experience a concussion.

On the contrary, it will help to play a role in emphasising to our players they must practice correct technique, and protect their head at all costs while helping to prevent cuts and abrasions.

Wearing our headgear can assist in limiting the severity of abrasions, possible breaks, a serious brain injury, or a skull fracture. However, evidence is ongoing to demonstrate helmets prevent concussions. Unfortunately, there is no 'concussion-proof' helmet.
